Privacy Policy

Actaeon is an iPhone app that lets a hunting club share its trail camera pictures and keep a record of the deer on its property. Actaeon is published and operated by Scott Morris, an individual developer ("we" and "us" in this policy). This policy covers the Actaeon app and the websites at actaeon.app and actaeon.us. It explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and how to get it deleted.

The short version. What you put in Actaeon is visible to the people in your camp and to nobody else, unless you share it. We don't show ads, we don't use analytics or tracking tools, and we don't sell or rent your information.

What we collect

Your account

Your email address and a password. We send an email to confirm the address before the account works.
A display name, taken from the part of your email before the @.
Your camp memberships: which camps you belong to and your role in each. For guests, we also record who invited you, what the invite allows, and when access ends.

Pictures and video

Trail camera pictures and videos you choose from your photo library, including pictures added by guests whose invite allows it. Actaeon only reads the items you pick.
Pictures are converted to JPEG on your phone before upload, which removes their embedded metadata, including any GPS location.
Videos are uploaded as the original file, so any metadata inside the file, which can include location, stays with it.
The date and time each picture was taken. Actaeon reads it from the file, or from the date stamp printed on the picture. Reading the stamp happens on your phone using Apple's on-device text recognition; the picture is not sent anywhere for that.
A fingerprint (a SHA-256 hash) of each file, so the same picture isn't added twice.

Location

Actaeon asks for your location only while you are using the app, and never tracks you in the background. Hunting mode uses your current location to work out whether you are at one of your camp's stands and to get the local wind from Apple Weather. That location is not saved.

A camp may also store locations its managers have entered, such as stands, trail cameras, and property lines.

Camp and deer records

Camp details: the property name and general location, season dates, deer management unit, DMAP and CWD zone information, and the club's buck rule
Deer records: names and other names, descriptions, age estimates, the camp's mark for each deer (such as trophy or pass), when a deer was first and last seen, and whether he is still alive

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store your device's push token so we can send you notifications about your camps. Only you can read your token.

How we use it

We use this information only to run Actaeon for you and your camp: to show your camp its pictures and deer, to send confirmation emails and notifications, to look up weather, and to keep the service working and secure. We don't use it for advertising and we don't build profiles about you.

Who can see it

Your camp. Content in a camp is visible to that camp's members. Guests can view the camp but can't change anything, and they only see deer marked Top Secret if the invite included them.
Guests you invite. A manager or officer can share the camp with a one-time invite link. The invite sets how long the guest keeps access, from one day to no end date, and the manager can revoke a guest at any time.
People you send pictures to. You can send picture files yourself using your iPhone's share sheet. Album links shared from earlier versions of the app keep working until they expire; they show one deer's pictures, its name, the camp's name, and the picture dates, but no locations.
Service providers that run parts of Actaeon for us, listed below. They process your information only to provide their service.
When the law requires it. We will disclose information if we are legally required to, such as by a valid court order.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is active. When you remove a single item in the app, it disappears from the app right away, but we may keep it for a while so it can be restored if it was removed by mistake. Deleting your account is different: it is immediate and permanent, as described below.

We keep backup copies of the database and pictures on a private server we control, so we can recover from a failure. Backups are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app: on the Camps screen, tap the gear icon, open Settings, and tap Delete account. The app shows what will be deleted, including any camps that will go with your account, and asks you to confirm. When you confirm, the following is deleted immediately and permanently:

Your account, your sign-in, and your email address
Your membership in every camp, and the records tied to you, such as your hunting activity and your devices' notification tokens
Every camp where you are the only manager, for everyone in it, including its deer, pictures, videos, and records
The Actaeon data stored on that phone

Pictures you added to a camp that someone else still manages stay with that camp. Actaeon does not record who uploaded a picture, so nothing in them identifies you. Deleted information is gone from our backups within 30 days.

If you can't use the app, email support@actaeon.app from the address on your account and we will delete it for you.

Security

All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted. Pictures are kept in private storage that only members of the camp can reach, and access rules are enforced on the server, not only in the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you if a breach affects it.

Children

Actaeon is not intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.

Your choices

You can turn off location, photo library access, or notifications at any time in your iPhone's Settings. Features that depend on them will stop working. Signing out clears Actaeon's saved camp data from your phone.
You can delete your account at any time in the app, as described above. You can also ask us for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct it, by emailing support@actaeon.app.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above. If a change affects how your information is shared, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
